CHRIS-CRAFT COBRA

The Cobra was a single seat speedster with a shark's dorsal fin and Corvette automotive style windscreen. A marriage of fiberglass and mahogany, she marked the beginning of the end for wooden Chris-Crafts. Produced for one year only 108 were built, about half of those were 18 footers, the others 21 foot. Power was supplied by a 158-hp six or if you purchased the 21 foot model you could chose a 200-hp Chrysler Hemi or 285-hp Cadillac V-8.This artwork is based on a Cobra owned by Terry Fiest's, it was the second 18 footer produced by Chris-Craft.

DODGE BOATS

Horace Elgin Dodge, Jr.'s father and uncle were stockholders in the Ford Motor Company and founders of the Dodge Automobile Company. Horace Jr. however had a passion for boats and power boat racing. The Horace E. Dodge Boat and Plane Corporation was started in Detroit in 1925. In 1929, a plant was opened in Newport News, Virginia where "gentlemen's runabouts" were built of mahogany and powered by Lycoming Marine engines with the Dodge trademark "flying lady" affixed to the bow. There were plans to build seaplanes too but they fell with the stock market. Boats such as the one depicted in this adaptation from a 1930 advertisement were tough to sell during the Great Depression so the Newport News plant was abandoned until WWII when it was put into use building PT boats. Dodge, who once had a fortune valued at $63 million, was broke by the time he died in 1963.

CLASSIC CHRIS-CRAFT RUNABOUT

In the 1800's, a "runabout" was a lightweight buggy made to be drawn by a single horse. The name carried over into the automotive era to refer to small open cars. In the 1920's, small, powerful powerboats appeared that, much like the buggy and car, were made for "running about".

CHRIS - CRAFT BARREL BACK

Christopher Columbus Smith, a professional duck hunter, along with his brother Henry began building "duck boats" in 1881. By the early 1900s Chris was building racing boats and runabouts under the name of the Smith and Ryan Boat Company. It was in the 1920s and 30s however that the craftsmanship of the Chris Smith and Sons Boat Company, located in Algonac, Michigan, made the name Chris-Craft synonymous with speed, comfort, style and luxury.
